The Best Roses for Gardens
Tuesday October 26, 2004, 7:30 pm

A rose is a rose is a rose - or is it? From wild roses in China to the latest roses from David Austin, discover the variety and beauty of the world's most popular flower. Roger will provide expert advise on selecting the best roses for your garden and will inspire you to experiment with new ways of incorporating them into your garden design.
Roger Philips, who was originally trained as a painter at the Chelsea School of Art, has pioneered the use of colour photographs for reliable plant identification. Over the last 25 years, Roger accumulated more than 26 books to his credit, ranging from Roses to Mushrooms, through Vegetables, Trees, Perennial Garden Flowers, Shrubs and Wild Flowers and has won numerous awards for photography and design. He is also well known on television, especially for his six part BBC series on the history of roses "The Quest for the Rose", which he both wrote and presented.

ART BELONGS IN THE GARDEN
w i t h James van Sweden, Landscape Architect
Friday, November 19, 7:00 p.m.

Convocation Hall, University of Toronto
31 King’s College Circle, St. George Campus

$25 General Admission Seating

James van Sweden, landscape-architect-to-the-stars, has a client list that includes
celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, as well as politicians and socialites. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to discover James van Sweden’s award winning approach to landscape design.

Art has an essential aesthetic role in the garden. Sculpture placement in a garden setting is challenging and exciting and should enhance appreciation of both the art and the garden. Painting is a fertile source for design inspiration in landscape
architecture. Works of art from many eras and styles suggest paving, pathways, bridges, and broad fields of color for the garden. Learn Mr van Sweden’s design techniques to create a landscape where the functionality of the garden and the aesthetic elements combine so completely that it is hard to imagine one without the other.
