REVITALIZATION
PROJECT 2004
September 2004 - The TBG has undertaken a $7.4 M revitalization
project to reconfigure, modernize and expand its building and surrounding
gardens. The significant expansion to the building will include
a 5000 square foot glass pavilion, topped off with a sloping green
roof. The green roof will be visible from ground level, affording
many educational and environmental benefits. Just as important as
the building, the project will also create and rejuvenate a series
of magnificent gardens in the nearly four acres surrounding the
building. The new well-designed outdoor spaces will showcase a variety
of styles, themes, sizes and design techniques. They will demonstrate
environmentally responsible gardening and will introduce the very
best of what can be grown in our region. Everyone will be able to
enjoy the splendour of the gardens, while learning practical applications
for their own green spaces.
As of September 2004, the TBG has raised 68 per cent of its campaign
goal. The plan has been fully endorsed by the City of Toronto which
has pledged $1.2 M towards the project. Other financial support
includes a lead gift of $1.5 M from George & Kathy Dembroski,
$500,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation, and the maximum grant
from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Building construction will
begin December 1, 2004 and is scheduled for completion in November
2005. The creation of the Gardens will commence in spring 2005 and
open in 2006. This project is the first step towards a larger vision
to preserve our natural heritage, reflect the diversity of our city
and leave a legacy for future generations.
